富士山北斜面のスコリア荒原に侵入した高木種カラマツの実生は強い乾燥や基質不安定性などの厳しい環境に曝されるが、矮性低木ミヤマヤナギがナース植物として働くことが知られている。カラマツに対するミヤマヤナギのナース植物効果の詳しいメカニズムを明らかにするため、14 年間の追跡調査を行い、カラマツの新規加入と生残、成長量をミヤマヤナギのパッチ内とパッチ外で比較した。カラマツ実生の新規加入数はパッチ内外で偏りは無く、定着への促進効果は認められなかった。生残率はパッチ内の方がパッチ外よりも高く、特にパッチ樹冠高よりも低い個体で顕著だった。一方でパッチ樹冠高を超えた個体では、パッチ内外で生残率に差はなかった。これより、カラマツの生残に対するミヤマヤナギの促進効果はカラマツがパッチ樹冠よりも小さい時に働き、パッチ樹冠高を超えると消失すると考えられる。カラマツの樹形はパッチ内外で異なっており、パッチ内に生育する個体はパッチ外の個体よりも主幹が細長く樹冠が広い形態をもっていた。14
